Prince, his royal badness himself, made his big screen debut in (and would win an Oscar for) this loose biopic about a passionate musician finding his way to success on the mean streets of Minnesota. Michael Keaton is back in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” 

Beetlejuice! It’s showtime! It’s been 36 years since Tim Burton, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder came together to make one of the greatest horror comedies of all time. Now the whole gang is back (well, except for Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Jeffrey Jones) in a new story of the Deetz family and the ghost with the most. Rated PG-13. Also stars Jenna Ortega, Catherine O’Hara and Willem Dafoe, who surprisingly has never been in a Tim Burton film before.

In this psychological horror film, a remake of the 2022 Danish thriller, "Gæsterne," an American family is delighted to be invited to spend the weekend at the estate of a charming British family, only to find that nothing is what it seems. Boy, their kid sure is quiet. What’s wrong, kid, James McAvoy got your tongue? Rated R. Also stars Mackenzie David and Scoot McNairy.

He was a cantor, she was an adult Bat Mitzvah student. Can I make it any more obvious? Nathan Silver, director of the superb “Thirst Street,” is back with another black comedy. A cantor, finding himself in both a crisis of faith and a crisis of voice, reunites with his grade school music teacher who reenters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student. Rated R. Stars Jason Schwartzman, the immortal Carol Kane and Robert “Triumph the Insult Comic Dog” Smigel.

The first Mexican selection to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards returns to the Roxy’s screen. Director Alfonso Cuarón presents a semi-autobiographical drama about his childhood growing up in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. Rated R. Stars Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira and Nancy Garcia. Cognizant hosts a special free screening Thursday, Sept. 19.

The funniest people from across the city gather to goof head to head for the chance of winning the title of funniest person in Missoula. Special guest headliner Austin Valley anchors one of the most beloved comedy events here in the City of Many Shoulders. Get your tickets before they’re gone. I unironically believe this is one of the greatest movies of the early 2000s. It’s been six whole hours and five long days since this punk rock prom queen and her best friends donned long tails and ears for hats and grabbed their guitars and Marshall stacks. Now they’ve signed to a major label, and find themselves as pawns in a subliminal messaging scheme. Rated PG-13. Stars Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson. Playing as part of Fake Bands, Real Bangers on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Despite Dewey Cox’s best efforts, Hollywood is still churning out formulaic and sanitized biopics about rock stars. Director Dexter Fletcher (who you might recognize from David Lynch’s "The Elephant Man") blew all of those cliched and white-washed films out of the water, however, by doing something truly unique with his story about Elton John’s life: He made the movie an out-and-out (pun intended) musical. Rated R. Stars Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell and Bryce Dallas Howard. Playing Tuesday, Sept. 24 as part of Out at the Roxy.

Hello again, friend of a friend! Fake Bands, Real Bangers continues with Edgar Wright’s frantic adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved series of graphic novels in this garage-rock/kung fu mash-up. Scumbag bass guitarist Scott Pilgrim's precious little life is interrupted when his literal dream girl skates into his world. Now he was to battle her seven evil exes who want nothing more than to eliminate him from her list of suitors. Rated PG-13. Stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kieran Culkin. Playing Wednesday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 28.

Tom Waits, the musician whose voice sounds like a marriage between whiskey and razor blades, got his own concert film, and it’s just as weird and engaging as you’d imagine. Built out of performance footage and dramatic set pieces, this film grabs you by the lapels and brings you into the hypnotic world of the Poet of Outcasts. Rated PG. Directed by Chris Blum. Playing of glorious 35mm Thursday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 29 as part of Wall of Sound.
