State to discuss property tax process

The Montana Department of Revenue is holding a town hall meeting Monday at the Lewis & Clark Library to discuss the property tax process.

The meeting will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the large event room at 120 S. Last Chance Gulch and the public may attend. The department and local governments are sponsoring the event, which is part of 26 town halls across the state.

“Property tax determination is a complex process in Montana, with state and local governments working together to accurately update and maintain Montana’s property valuation records,” a posting announcing the meeting says.

Ceremony to honor 9/11

Attorney General Austin Knudsen and the Montana Department of Justice will host a ceremony commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The fallen heroes who gave their lives to uphold public safety and answered the call to service and the victims who lost their lives that day will be honored.

The event is open to the public and will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday in the state Capitol Rotunda.

The ceremony will feature Kevin Shea, who was a first responder in New York City on the day of the attack, as well as Helena Fire Chief Jon Campbell, the Montana Highway Patrol Honor Guard, and the Montana State Firefighter's Association Honor Guard. 

Heroes of Helena salute Sept. 8

The Heroes of Helena Appreciation BBQ will be 1-5 p.m. Sept. 8 at Albertsons, 3151 N. Montana Ave.

It is a Sept. 11, 2001, remembrance and the ninth year it is being held in Helena. More than 500 people attended last year, organizers said. The event is free.

Other than the barbecue, there will be music such as bagpipers, food, games, helicopters, fire trucks and police displays. The public is invited to attend to show support for these emergency personnel and first responders.

Proceeds from the barbecue will go to the Coffee for a Veteran fund and the rural fire council to assist both groups.

Eric Dowell, manager of Safeway and event organizer, said this year there will be a tribute box to help the family of FireBoss pilot Juliana Turchetti, 45, who died July 10 when her aircraft crashed into a mountainside and landed in Hauser Lake as she was helping to fight the Horse Gulch fire.

Turchetti was employed by Dauntless Air, an Idaho-based firefighting company.

NorthWestern seeks comment on river recreation

NorthWestern Energy is hosting a public comment sessions in Helena and Great Falls to review recreational facilities on the Missouri and Madison rivers.

NWE owns and operates two dams on the Madison River — Hebgen and Madison. On the Missouri River, NWE owns and operates seven dams — Hauser, Holter, Black Eagle, Rainbow, Cochrane, Ryan and Morony.

NorthWestern is gathering comment about public recreation along the river corridors included in the Missouri-Madison Comprehensive Recreation Plan, part of its federal licensing requirement.

At each meeting, organizers will present a summary of the Missouri-Madison Comprehensive Recreation Plan and its projects, providing background on use history, access, improvements and opportunities.

NorthWestern Energy, in partnership with the public-private Missouri-Madison River Fund, has provided $6.4 million in grant funding for public recreation, leveraging $12.9 million in public recreation enhancements since 2007. NorthWestern Energy has also contributed $1.8 million in matching funds.

Free safety, security training seminar

Montana Jewish Project is hosting a free in-person learning opportunity on safety and security training that can be of benefit to anyone in the Helena community.

The training will be by Phil Niedringhaus and his team at SCN (Secure Community Network). The event includes free pizza.

Museum director to speak

Join Molly Kruckenberg, director of the Montana Historical Society, to learn about the Montana Heritage Center at the Sept. 16 meeting of the History Corral Dinner.

Now under construction, the Montana Heritage Center will open in November 2025 and will invite visitors to explore the many stories of Montana's past.

Public Health to host 4-part film screening

Lewis and Clark Public Health is hosting a four-part film series and community conversation this fall and winter.

Free and open to the public, each stand-alone film is an hour long and will be followed by an hour of facilitated conversations among residents, medical providers, scientists and more.

"The Invisible Shield" film screenings and community conversations have been scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Jan. 7 at the Myrna Loy Theater, 15 N. Ewing St. in Helena.

Streaming on PBS, "The Invisible Shield" documentary series explores how public health has increased life spans and saved countless lives from disease throughout human history, and how underfunding, disinformation and skepticism of science and government is putting human health at risk.

Register at library to vote

Sept. 17 is National Voter Registration Day and people can stop by the Lewis & Clark Library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to register to vote.

It just takes a few minutes. Save time by registering to vote or updating your registration now, the League of Women Voters of Helena says.

People can register to vote and either receive an absentee ballot after Oct. 11 or be registered to vote at the polls on Nov. 5.

Starting Oct. 8, you will have to late register in person at the Elections Office.

Join Carroll College for their Constitution Day panel at 7-9 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Simperman Hall/Wiegand Amphitheatre, moderated by Department Chair and Associate Professor of Political Science Jeremy Johnson.

Good Samaritan hosting 'Back in School' event

Good Samaritan Ministries on Sept. 14 will host a “Back in School” Community Engagement and Resource Information Event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Good Samaritan Store, 3067 N. Montana Ave.

Good Samaritan Ministries provides stability to the Helena-area community by creating a network of care and connecting people to resources to help create stability in their lives.

They are looking for sponsors for this fundraising event.

This “Back in School” event will feature an on-site photographer for school portraits; in-store 50% or more sales and other discounts on school items and clothing; and sacks with healthy food items (two weeks of lunch snacks) per child. They are seeking healthy food donations and snack donations from grocers and others.

Apply for hunting camp extensions

The Belt Creek – White Sulphur Springs Ranger District will once again be accepting applications for 13 hunting camp extensions, five camps in Nugget Creek, five camps in Geis Creek, and three camps in Deadman. 

These hunting camp extensions enable folks to enjoy a more remote experience in the forest and stay beyond the 16-day limit enforced across national forests in Montana. This opportunity is applicable only during the general rifle season, Oct. 26-Dec. 1.

Applicants will be selected on the first come basis, until all 13 camps are authorized.  The Belt Creek – White Sulphur Springs Ranger District will accept applications between Sept. 1-15.  Applications must be received (not postmarked) in the district office by close of business (4:30 p.m.) Sept. 15 to be considered. 

Those interested should complete an application form, and mail or deliver it to the Belt Creek Ranger District, 4234 U.S. Highway 89, Neihart, MT 59465.

Head Start fundraising event Oct. 3

The Rocky Mountain Development Council’s Head Start Program invites the community to support their vital work at the Friends of Head Start Extravaganza fundraiser.

This event features live music, hors d'oeuvres, a no-host bar and auctions, with all proceeds benefiting the Head Start Program.

Festivities start at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3, at Delta Hotels Helena Colonial, 2301 Colonial Drive, Helena. Tickets are $30 and available at www.rmdc.net.

Rocky’s Head Start Program provides high-quality, comprehensive early childhood development to low-income families across Lewis and Clark, Broadwater and Jefferson counties. Lecture discusses Israel, Palestine

Plymouth Congregational Church and the Unitarian - Universalist Church will host a presentation by Carroll College professor Jeanette Fregulia on the history of Israel and Palestine prior to the current conflict.

The presentation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 8, at 400 S. Oakes in Helena.

The public may attend. A meal of potatoes and salad will be provided prior to the presentation.
