Description

Missoula's County Commissioners approved a 3% cost of living raise for most elected officials within the county, including the top attorney, sheriff and all three commissioners.

State law requires the county to form a compensation board each year to determine pay increases around the region while also comparing their pay rates to similar counties.

That board requested a 3% increase, which Missoula County Chief Administrative Officer Chris Lounsbury said matches the increase non-union county employees will see next year.

Missoula County Commissioners will now make a base salary ranging from $109,000 to $112,000. Commissioners and some other elected officials also get an automatic 1% increase in pay per year.

"For elected official pay, it keeps Missoula County in line with the practice of the larger counties, which is where we really compare ourselves, like Yellowstone and Gallatin County," Lounsbury said.

County Attorney Matt Jennings will be the highest paid elected official, banking $148,000 annually. Missoula County Sheriff Jeremiah Peterson holds the second highest salary at $147,000.

Other officials seeing a pay bump include the county treasurer, county superintendent of schools, county auditor, clerk of district court and two Justices of the Peace. In total, 11 top county officials will see a pay bump.

Lounsbury said last year the sheriff's department received a 15% pay increase to make deputy and detention center pay more competitive with the rest of the state.

County Commissioner Josh Slotnick said the sheriff pay increases helped close the gap with staffing needs within the sheriff's office and the county's detention facility. He said both departments are fully staffed now.
