Description

When Carol and Richard Atkinson met with their accountant this summer, they had one big question: “How will the new tax law affect the way we give to the causes we love?” Like many families in the Flathead Valley, they have been loyal supporters of local nonprofits for many years. They weren’t necessarily looking to give less, but they wanted to give wisely.

That’s the heart of many conversations right now, thanks to the new One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Signed into law on July 4, 2025, it brings changes that may influence the timing and structure of charitable gifts. While generosity in our valley never wavers, smart planning can help stretch your impact even further.

“With upcoming changes to tax law, charitable giving strategies may look different next year,” said Jake Carter, a local CPA with JCCS. “It’s wise to plan early so you can maximize both your philanthropic impact and the potential tax benefits.”

For example, in 2025 the standard deduction increases. Some families may benefit from “bunching” several years of charitable giving into one year—often using a Donor Advised Fund at Whitefish Community Foundation—to maximize tax savings while still supporting nonprofits annually.

Other provisions matter, too. Starting in 2026, even non-itemizers will be able to deduct up to $2,000 in charitable gifts, and eligible retirees making charitable distributions from their IRA can satisfy their required minimum distribution and direct up to $108,000 each year to charity  - all without increasing their taxable income.

While these new rules create opportunities to give more strategically, the true motivation for philanthropy remains unchanged: a desire to strengthen our community and improve local lives.

As the Flathead Valley’s home for charitable giving for 25 years, Whitefish Community Foundation remains committed to working alongside you—and your local and out-of-state advisors—to ensure your generosity has the greatest possible impact for the people and nonprofits that enrich our lives.
