Description

The Roundup for Safety Board of Directors in August awarded $39,540 to support nine area nonprofit community safety projects.

North Valley Search and Rescue (NVSAR) received $11,340 toward the purchase of new dry suits for its swiftwater rescue technicians. Flathead Wildlife was awarded $4,000 for the continuation of its hunter orange safety vest program.

NVSAR serves the northern Flathead Valley west of the Whitefish Divide, north to Glacier National Park, east to the Glacier County line near Marias Pass, and south to the Great Bear Wilderness, Hungry Horse Reservoir and Jewel Basin areas. Founded in 1970, NVSAR volunteers typically donate over 2,200 hours of their collective time to search and rescue missions each year, along with another 4,000-plus hours training. Some of that training includes Swift Water Rescue to ensure they are prepared to help on 114 miles of the North, South, and Middle Forks of the Flathead River and the Hungry Horse Reservoir. NVSAR has 15 certified Swift Water technicians. After years of repair, NVSAR is retiring six dry suits from service and requested assistance with their replacement.

Flathead Wildlife, Inc., is a fish and wildlife sportsman group made up of men, women, and youth from the Flathead area. Flathead Wildlife works with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to provide each successful area graduate of the Hunter Education program with a hunter orange safety vest. Jim Vashro presented on behalf of Flathead Wildlife, noting that Montana law requires hunters to wear at least 400 square inch of hunter orange above the waist while in the field. He shared that hunter orange has proven to be a significant factor in reducing injury and death from mistaken identity accidents.

“The rate of hunting accidents in general is extremely low, thanks in part to Montana’s hunter orange requirement. Hunting,” Vashro said, “could be safer than golf.”

In awarding funds, the Board noted the nonprofit’s matching funds and partnership with FWP with approval.

At the Aug. 14 meeting, community safety grants were also awarded to:

Kalispell Middle School – playground safety equipment - $1,70; St. Matthew’s Catholic School – safety glass -- $2,000; Nate Chute Foundation – gun safety boxes and drug locks bags -- $2,500; Flathead K9 Foundation – K9 -- $12,000; Columbia Falls Academic Foundation – choral risers -- $3,000; Flathead Trails Association – first aid/CPR training -- $2,000; Montana Alpine Race School – safety netting -- $1,000

Roundup for Safety funding comes from participating Flathead Electric Cooperative members who allow their monthly electric bills to be rounded up to the nearest dollar. The program costs each member about $6 per year and has provided over $5 million in funding since 1997. To learn more, please visit Roundup for Safety - Flathead Electric Cooperative.
