For Natalie Garvin and her twin daughters, Madeline and Elizabeth Lambert, being able to spread joy through good food and drink is the motivation behind the Sugar and Spice food truck.
The food truck offers a range of miniature doughnuts, each packed with a pop of unique flavor, along with homemade chai and coffee. The name of the truck comes after the two main offerings — doughnuts for sugar and chai for spice.
“At the end of the day it’s all about love, we just want to spread kindness,” Garvin said, standing next to the pink truck on a July morning. “When you’re giving out love, you’re receiving it too.”
Doughnut flavor options include Nutella drizzle, huckleberry, lemon zest and powdered sugar mash up. The honey and salt doughnut packs the perfect balance between sweet and salty, and the sugar and spice doughnut, the namesake bite, is a mix of sugar and cinnamon.
It’s a simple menu, Elizabeth said, allowing focus on quality over quantity.
Using an automatic miniature doughnut machine, Garvin and the Lamberts can whip out hundreds of doughnuts an hour.
The doughnuts have a crisp exterior with a soft and warm interior. The toppings are intentionally chosen to highlight the flavors people love while also utilizing creativity.
Outside of the set menu, Sugar and Spice has numerous specials throughout the year. The current summer special is a s’mores doughnut, mimicking the outdoor spirit that many love about this place.
“We wanted to bring in the essence of Montana and West Glacier and this place we love,” Elizabeth Lambert said.
The current summer special menu also features a lemon lavender spritz drink and a berry yogurt bowl, as well as a special chai dubbed the Grinnell Ginger Chai, a blend of black tea, ginger, turmeric, cardamom and cloves.
Sugar and Spice makes all of the chai drinks in house, specifically a labor of love for Garvin’s husband Cary and Elizabeth. The Smokey the Bear chai is made with pine-smoked lapsang tea, a touch of cocoa powder and other spices.
The Going to the Sun chai is more of a traditional masala chai with cinnamon, star anise, pepper, cardamom and cloves. And is Garvin’s favorite.
Most teas are steeped for three to five months. Milk alternatives are offered at no additional charge.
Originally from Michigan, Garvin moved to the Valley in 2022. With both daughters’ home from after graduating from college and the help of her husband Cary, the food truck is a family endeavor.
Elizabeth studied fashion in Paris for her undergraduate degree and is planning to return soon to get her masters. Madeline, who graduated from Michigan State University, is returning to school next fall to get her masters in biochemistry.
“This is a good reset and it’s a good way to spend time with everyone,” Madeline said.
Elizabeth did all the graphic design and marketing for the truck.
Sugar and Spice also values local ingredients. The vanilla comes from Wild Montana Foods out of Whitefish and the honey from Great Northern Honey Company in Kalispell.
The truck is parked in Coram at 135 Seville Lane, on Thursdays and Fridays to offer early morning goers to Glacier National Park a fun breakfast option. They also frequent the West Glacier KOA on Mondays.
Weekend locations vary. The truck is also available for catering and events, including weddings, parties and corporate events.
