Access to Logan Pass on Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road remained closed Sunday as a summer solstice storm dumped heavy snow on the high terrain of Northwest Montana.

The National Weather Service said a foot or more of snow could accumulate above 6,000 feet by the time the storm wrapped up.

Images from the Glacier Conservancy's webcams on 6,644-foot Logan Pass on Sunday morning showed a thick blanket of snow at the Hidden Lake Trailhead and the Logan Pass Visitor Center. 

Glacier officials on Friday implemented a temporary closure of the alpine sections of Going-to-the-Sun Road.

The ski slopes on the summit of Big Mountain at Whitefish Mountain Resort also picked up heavy snow, with about 6 inches accumulating by Sunday morning.

"Wrap-around moisture into Northwest Montana was delayed but eventually brought significant snow to Glacier National Park by Saturday evening," the Weather Service stated in its Monday forecast. "Another shortwave trough will arrive [Sunday] evening, bringing renewed showers to Northwest Montana tonight as northwesterly flow develops."

Winter weather advisories remained in effect through noon Sunday for elevations above 6,000 feet.

Cool, rainy weather remained in the forecast for valley locations through Monday with lows in the 30s and 40s.
