Description

Prosecutors have filed felony charges against a woman who allegedly punched and spat at Kalispell Police officers while they handcuffed her inside a discount store in late January.

Courtney Danielle Carper, 33, faces felony counts of assault on a peace officer and threats or improper influence in official or political matters in Flathead County District Court. She is expected to appear before Judge Paul Sullivan on Feb. 20 for her arraignment.

Carper remains in the county jail with bail set at $105,000.

Authorities attempted to handcuff Carper after responding to a report of a disorderly woman at a chain discount store on U.S. 93 North about 5:22 p.m., Jan. 28, according to court documents. Carper allegedly shoved herself backward into an officer and tried to pull her hands away. Telling the officers she didn't have any warrants, she attempted to run down an aisle, court documents said.

Still holding her arm, an officer swept her feet out and knocked her to the ground, according to court documents. Authorities rolled her onto her stomach and told her to put her hands behind her back.

But Carper allegedly began screaming, flipped over and spat gum at the officer's face. It struck him on the cheek, court documents said.

The officer eventually rolled Carper into what court documents described as a "[Kalispell Police Department] defensive tactics approved 'knee on belly' position." She allegedly began screaming at him and using expletives before threatening him with death. When the officer again instructed her to roll onto her stomach, Carper called him a slur and used an expletive, court documents said. Then she allegedly punched him in the neck.

"You right now are gonna be dead because of your knee," she allegedly told him after he informed her the punch constituted a felony charge.

Carper was brought under control with the arrival of backup, court documents said. Authorities allegedly found a pocket knife and three razor blades in her pockets.

Employees later told officers that Carper, who was sentenced on a drug possession charge the week prior, threatened to kill them as well, according to court documents.
