Description

A masked individual shot and killed the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in New York City on Wednesday, law enforcement confirmed.

Authorities believe Brian Thompson, 50, was the victim of a targeted attack and there is no threat to the public.

The incident happened just before 7 a.m. near a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Times reports that Thompson was taken to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, but died a short time later.

The gunman has not been located. A $10,000 reward is being offered for his capture.

UnitedHealthcare is one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States.

Thompson was due to participate in the company's annual meeting with investors on Monday. The Associated Press reports that an announcement was made to attendees that the conference would be ending early.
