Description
The intersection of Batavia Lane and U.S. 2 near Smith Valley School could see a roundabout installed in the coming years.
The Montana Department of Transportation deemed a single-lane roundabout the best option for the intersection after studying the area. The state agency worked with the engineering consultant Robert Peccia and Associates on a conceptual design.
State officials have not yet lined up funds for the project, but construction could begin within the next five to seven years.
Those interested in learning more about the project can attend an open house at Smith Valley School from 4 to 7 p.m., Feb. 4. Members of the public can view the proposed plans, ask questions and offer their thoughts about the proposed design during the event.
A road safety audit conducted by the Federal Highway Administration in 2014 determined the intersection needed safety improvements. Multiple crashes at the intersection and near-miss accidents at the pedestrian crosswalk on U.S. 2 were noted in the audit.
Right-hand turns onto Batavia Lane to access an area gas station, obstructed views and confusing signage were also cited as safety concerns by the state transportation agency.
Those who cannot attend the open house can email Kristine Fife at [email protected] or call the project hotline at 406-207-4484 for more information.
