White House calls Amazon's reported plan to list tariff costs on items 'hostile'

Description

The White House is pushing back against Amazon’s reported plan to list tariff-related price increases alongside products on its website.

"This is a hostile and political act by Amazon," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. "Why didn't Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest levels in 40 years?"

Leavitt was reacting to a report from Punchbowl News, which stated Amazon will display how much President Trump's tariffs are adding to the price of each product. The report cited a person familiar with the plan.

Scripps News has not independently confirmed the plan with Amazon.

However, Washington Post reporter Jeff Stein said he received a statement from the company indicating that the team managing Amazon Haul, its low-cost shopping platform, had considered showing import charges on some items.

“This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties,” the statement said.

Amazon launched Amazon Haul in late 2024 to compete with platforms like Temu and Shein, which also specialize in low-cost goods.

Meanwhile, Chinese retailer Temu has begun adding an "import fee" to purchases in response to the new tariffs.

The U.S. and China remain engaged in a trade war, with Trump announcing a 145% tariff on imported goods from China. In response, China has imposed a 125% tariff on goods imported from the U.S.
