Description

Writing Coaches of Montana is seeking volunteers to help fourth- through 12th-grade students in Flathead County public schools improve their writing skills.

Coaches help students by encouraging them to think critically about writing assignments so they can become confident and competent writers across subjects, according to a press release.

Prior experience isn’t necessary and volunteers will receive training in best practices by qualified individuals. There is no minimum time requirement to volunteer. Coaches will choose writing assignments, schools and grade levels where teachers request support.

People interested in volunteering may attend a training session scheduled from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sept. 30 at Flathead County Library. Register online at writingcoachesofmontana.org or email program coordinator Jeanne Wdowin at [email protected].  Additional training sessions will be held throughout the school year.

“My students love having the coaches come help them, and the benefits go beyond improving their writing skills. The one-on-one attention is something the students need, and this is the best program with the most direct positive impact on students that I’ve ever seen in my 27 years of teaching,” Kalispell Middle School teacher Kristi Sanders said.

Teachers and administrators interested in partnering with Writing Coaches of Montana may contact Executive Director Cassise Sheets at [email protected]

Started in Missoula County in 1995, Writing Coaches of Montana has served Flathead County teachers and students since 2015.
